 <<Precipice of Mind
« Thread Started on Nov 11, 2006, 12:24pm »

Dead silence. The heavens bled crimson as the day grew old, the great inferno of the sky preparing to retire from its daily trek across the desert canvas. There was dampness to everything, so unlike the arid climate, but a nuisance it was to the animals that had grown accustomed the dry, crackling terra that was the Ebony River. Very rarely did rain ever touch its deadened surface, choking the hopes of new life to rise, and leaving the sandy grounds but a graveyard of what had once tried to thrive in this hell on earth. A dagger of flaxen hue slid beneath the surface of the sand, the particles of rock sifting as, with each step, the desert was forever marked by his footsteps. His walk was lazy, each foot digging into the loose sod, the sand consuming him before he withdrew himself, only to set his foot down once again mere inches away. His sides dilated, nostrils flaring as his lungs ate up the air. Ribs jerked, the dust from his breath clogging his throat; he truly was not yet accustomed to this place. The change was subtle, but if he were to call this place his realm, then change would occure.

His dappled neck lunged to the left, flicking his shaggy ebon mane from his skin, the dampness soaking his hair and causing it to cling to him. His forelock formed a veil over his hollow eyes, containing their tainted glare that stretched out among the land. Lithe body stood still halting as a gust of wind lashed at him, the tiny grains of sand that kicked up biting at his face. The wind settled, a drop of sweat flowing through the grooves of his cheek, caressing his skin before it plunged from his skin, ending its life on the singed ground. Ears swiveled about his crown, trapping the faintest sound of trickling water the way a web did a moth. Water? But, from what he could see, the thin line that marked the horizon was pure black, like the wings of a raven. Was it possible that this desert had a life source, that equine could possibly survive within these boundaries? His newfound curiosity spurred energy within him, enabling him to leap forward. Daggers landed with a thud against the ground, trudging through the sand, his hind legs kicking up clouds of dust as he slowly, but surely, made his way to the river. As he neared the liquid, the ground became harder, like the copper rock of the canyons, until he could finally step without losing his flints in sand. Slowing from his previous run, his body glimmered in his frame's liquid, his muscles working to cool himself. The stallion was pleased with what his eyes beheld. As he met the banks of the river, he halted, his ebon lips curling into a wicked grin. The water... it was tainted with darkness! Never had he come across such a beautious creation of nature; never before had he seen anything in nature that brought happiness to his heart full of hatred.

His nape lowered under gravity, maw sinking beneath the murky waters. Lips parted so the liquid flooded his maw, reviving his dry throat. It amazed him how, despite the liquid's color, his tongue had been deceived into beleiving the water was crystal. Releived, his crown ascended into the air once more, nothing left in the river but rings, until the slow current washed even those away. Washed away... just like his past. His lids closed tightly as he allowed himself to reflect. Just a week ago, it happened. An event that totally and completely altered his life. He had belonged to a herd of titanic proportions, and he was an heir, that is, below his brother. His brother was the heir to the throne, and a strong stallion at that, far stronger than Ransom was and is to this day. However, his brother had been tainted, and he... he... did the unthinkable. Before he plunged into an abyss of memory, Ransom shook his head, eyes opening so the sun glinted off his pupils. What happened on that day would not reoccur, he would not let it. And, everything he did in life would only make him stronger, until he avenged himself in the form of killing his brother. Ah yes, Ransom would kill his brother, his own blood, because of what he did. A small smile lit up his features, the blissful thought burning into memory. But, he would have to take small steps. He would start by raising a herd of his own, creating an army and rising to power. Then, he would go after the king of all Equidem, the one they called... Presagio. Yes, Presagio. On his way into these lands, many other equine had whispered his name, as if a curse would be brought upon them the second his name left their lips. But, Ransom was far smarter than to attack the King directly. No, he had other plans, plans that would turn these lands upside down. As the sun began to descend beyond the horizon of sand dune, the great dappled stallion closed his eyes once more. Shoving his weight against the gravity of the earth, he rose to his hind legs, ebon tassle draped against the ground as his forelegs flailed about the air, slashing the winds brutally. Lips parted, summoning the most wicked of callings from his gut. Let it be know that Ebony River was under rule of Ransom, and the fall of Presagio would soon become reality...

((I rushed the ending a bit, but whatever, too lazy to do a good job, since it is only a claiming post...))
